This Program is for current and aspiring foremen, supervisors or managers; it provides a thorough, practical introduction to the techniques and skills needed to effectively manage subordinates, as individuals and in groups, so they work well and willingly as a team to achieve organisational objectives.  The Program provides skills and knowledge which are easy to understand and put into practice; this training is ideal for people seeking successful careers in supervision, or who are aiming for promotion to higher supervisory posts, and for progress to higher studies.

(1) Anybody enrolling for this Programme before 31st December 2024 will also be enrolled FREE for a Course on Strategy, Quality & Contemporary Business Concerns; the only requirement is that you provide your personal email address to the College on enrolment.

(2) During the “Covid-19” (Corona) virus pandemic and in lock-down periods, affected Members may be allowed to take Assignments (home-based course work) instead of or in addition to sitting Examinations to complete the Programme; details can be provided on request after enrolment onto the Programme.

Module 1 - The Human Resource

Module 2 - Planning and Organising Work

  • The modern workforce, encouraging employees to work well
  • Training employees: importance, what and how, types of training
  • Work teams or workgroups, the supervisor, the manager, leadership
  • Planning and objectives, forecasting, organising and coordination: work, materials, environment, effort

Module 3 - Supervision and Control of Workgroups

  • Motivation, motivators, goals and expectations; job satisfaction, a good work climate
  • Motivation by the supervisor: leadership, setting good examples; being interested, understanding, fair, honest, impartial
  • Building a good working relationship, being approachable, developing commitment
  • Records, control, standards, performance; spans of control

Module 4 - Responsibilities of Management

  • The meaning of responsibility, responsibility and rewards, seniority, authority, accountability
  • Responsibilities for: customers and the community, security, confidentiality, improvements, employee relations, protection of assets, achieving profits
  • Responsibilities towards subordinates for: fair and equal treatment, workload, safety, work and job factors, training and promotion
  • Companies: shareholders, board of directors, managing director, executive and non-executive directors

Module 5 - Delegation of Responsibility

  • The meaning of delegation, why delegation is needed
  • The first stages in delegation: what to delegate, delegating to the right people, maintaining managerial control
  • Delegating in the right way: teaching and training, allocation of work, mistakes to avoid in delegating, monitoring performance
  • Decision-making: by managers, supervisors, subordinates, the decision-making process, implementing the decisions

Module 6 - How Businesses are Organised

  • The division of labour, specialisation, how businesses expand: workgroups, departments, branches
  • Workgroups and team building, influences on behaviour, group norms, supervisors and building cohesive workgroups
  • Organisational structures, line organisation, functional organisation, line & staff organisation
  • Organisation charts, purposes, types, benefits, problems to avoid, changes

Module 7 - Communication and Communication Skills

  • The purpose and need for communication; spoken, unspoken, written, visual; messages, “meaning”, two-way communication, benefits of good communication
  • Lines of communication, effective communication by supervisors and managers, dangers of the “grapevine”
  • Vertical and horizontal communication, the need for feedback, selecting the best method of communication
  • Improving communication skills, overcoming barriers to effective communication, the principles of effective communication

Module 8 - Recruitment and Selection of Personnel

  • Scope of human resource (HR) activities, the HR department, the role of managers, supervisors and foremen in HR
  • Recruitment of personnel, vacancies, internal and external recruitment, sources of new employees; job analysis, job descriptions, employee specifications, application forms
  • Selection: roles of junior managers and supervisors, assessing applications, employment interviews, selection tests
  • Appointment, terms and conditions of employment, probationary periods

Module 9 - Induction, Training & Employee Development

  • Manager/Supervisor and HR department cooperation, establishing good relations, monitoring, reports
  • Induction: purpose, objectives, induction programs, first impressions; environmental, workgroup and job induction; the “guide” system
  • Training and employee development: advantages, methods of training, independent and employer-sponsored training
  • Health and safety in the workplace training, hazards, dangers to avoid, fire precautions, refresher training, safety-conscious personnel

Module 10 - Employee Counselling, Equal Opportunities

  • Disciplinary action, minor infractions, serious misdemeanours, stages to follow, steps to reduce incidences
  • Employee counselling, causes of work-related problems, the approach and attitude to take, joint problem solving
  • Equal opportunities, anti-discrimination, legislation, policies; bullying and harassment, workplace stress and anxiety; time management, flexible working
  • Trade unions: activities, shop stewards, supervisors, collective bargaining, staff associations

Module 11 - Job Grading, Promotion, Job Redesign

  • Job satisfaction, factors which lead to satisfaction, the worth and diversity of jobs, their differences
  • Job evaluation, job analysis, job grading, job ranking, job rating: reasons why and benefits
  • Promotion: aspects affecting supervisors/managers, why people seek promotion, steps to prepare for promotion
  • Job design and redesign: factors involved; job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment

Module 12 - Supervisory Management in Practice

  • Appointment as supervisor: adapting to new authority, responsibilities and duties, budget matters
  • Stages in and approaches to problem solving and decision-making
  • Exercising authority: the 5-step method, instructions, approachability, action, reports, crises
  • Departure of subordinates: references, resignations, exit interviews, dismissal, retirement, pensions
